Character history:
If rumours are to be believed, Selina Kyle is in fact the secret daughter of Carmine and Louisa Falcone, given up for adoption as part of the Mafia boss’ arrangements to leave Italy for the United States. No definitely proof of this has ever been found but there is enough circumstantial evidence to make it a strong possibility.
Regardless of the details of her birth, Selina was raised by Brian and Maria Kyle. Life was not easy as Maria committed suicide when Selina was very young, which led Brian to become an alcoholic who eventually drunk himself to death. This left Selina to try and take care of her younger sister, Maggie.
To try and make it in the rough and dangerous city of Gotham, Selina often turned to less than ideal means. Whether she truly worked as a prostitute or just posed as one to con men and later steal from them is often debated (and she certainly isn’t telling). What is known however is that eventually, inspired both by Batman and those who fought, she became a costumed burglar. Having always been a fan of cats, she decided to make that her symbol of choice. She also made use of gymnastics and martial art skills she had developed during her early life and became quite successful.
It was then that she first encountered Batman face-to-face and began the most important relationship of her adult life. While the two were often at odds with each other, there was something that also drew them together, even as they continued their game of cat-and-mouse (no pun intended). She did eventually make the decision to stop stealing and try to live a lawful life, though certainly never a boring one.
She also did have run ins with many of the other familiar faces in Gotham’s criminal world. One of the more memorable ones, given her supposed heritage, was an encounter with Carmine Falcone where she scratched his face, scarring him.
Eventually Selina became aware of her rumoured connection to the Falcone family and begins investigating. At this time, Batman was hunting for the serial killer, Holiday, and also ended up investigating Falcone. He caught Catwoman attempting to break into the Falcone vault but she avoids his questions into her motives for such an act. She continued to investigate and also attending parties thrown by the family, while also finding time to save Batman’s ass (and getting to bitchslap Poison Ivy while she’s at it).
Selina was also present for Carmine Falcone’s death at the hands of Two Face. Also present, among others, was Sofia Falcone, Carmine’s daughter (and perhaps Selina’s sister). Sofia reacted quite badly to the murder and tried to kill Two Face. Selina attempted to stop her and both women ended up going out a window. Right before they fell, Selina scratched Sofia’s face, similar to what she had done to Carmine. Selina was able to catch hold of a ledge and keep herself from falling. Sofia survived the fall but, as a result of her injuries, became confined to a wheelchair.
After Carmine’s death, Selina decided to continue to investigate her parentage by travelling to Rome, bringing Edward Nigma, aka the Riddler, along because she thought he might be useful. While there, she suffered from repeated hallucinations/nightmares involving Batman, Brian Kyle, and her own identity concerns, as well as facing enemies armed with mainly familiar weapons from those in Gotham (such as drugs used by the Joker and Mr Freeze’s freeze gun). Eventually she came to realize that the Riddler was in fact manipulating her, even causing the hallucinations by using the Scarecrow’s fear toxins. Despite this, she did continue to gain information that pointed to the rumours being true. Still, she had to leave without knowing for certain.
While in Italy, Selina also looked into Sofia Falcone’s condition, as she was worried about her presumed-sister. At the time, she found Sofia's plastic surgeon but couldn't find any record of her orthopaedic surgeon.
When she finally returned to Gotham, Selina discovered that Carmine Falcone’s body was missing. She searched for it in the city morgue but was attacked and knocked out before she got far. When she woke up she was in a coffin that was about to be cremated. Luckily, Batman arrived in time to save her (much to her annoyance and embarrassment). She feels better later when she is able to repay the favour and ends up telling him that she went to Italy, though only mentions following Sofia.
Sofia meanwhile turns out to have faked her paralysis. She continues to try and kill Two Face, only to be stopped once more by Batman. Two Face then shoots her in the head, killing her.
The Hush incident began some time afterwards. During this time she and Batman joined forces, while also finally giving in and embarking on a romantic relationship. Because of this, Batman eventually decided to reveal his identity as Bruce Wayne.
Many familiar faces were tied up in the Hush incident, including Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Two Face (who had recently undergone surgery to repair his face and potential cure his multiple personalities disorder), The Riddler, The Scarecrow, and Clayface. Catwoman herself was also involved as a pawn of the villain Hush, who turned out to be Thomas Elliot, a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. At first it appeared that Catwoman acted entirely under the influence of Poison Ivy, with whom she had an established rivalry, but later Batman began to doubt whether or not she had been an active and willing participant. This lack of trust put a quick end to their romance, though she never did reveal his identity, thus suggesting that perhaps Bruce had jumped the gun when he suspected her.
It was only a few days later when she woke up and found herself in Glaxcin Prison.
Character personality:
Selina is a fiercely independent woman. She has had to take care of herself almost her entire life and resents having to accept help, though she does recognize that sometimes (very rarely) she needs it. She gives off the appearance of being extremely confident and in many ways it is the truth. However the question of her parentage does shake how she views her own identity, causing her to go to great lengths to investigate the rumours.
Selina is very smart but she can be fooled, mainly by opponents whom she underestimates (such as the Riddler during their time in Rome). She is very knowledgeable about the criminal world, both from being part of it and from investigating it.
She can be quite a flirt, though only around attractive men. She also loves shoes and fashion.
And cats, of course.
